Use contemporary practises as the main narrative. Not Jung as the main narrative.The central point to make is that using the metaphore of incense (aesthetic qualities and cultural qualities of incense: sense of smell, sense of ritual, actions, fire…) Instead of moving to Jung, I should move to observing the culture of incense in contemporary practices and show that it is indeed possible and happening. And use Jung to look at how this might be working. If I start from Jung I can only approach incense culture in a partial way, but you want to show this overview first.
Jung’s quote (page 7?) he talks about senses are included and their role in art. Use his viewpoint in your own way and apply it to contemporary practices. Then you need to think about how incense is used in sciamanic cultures for example. Restructure how you can create your narrative. Jung should be a tool rather than a premises.
Another thing is focus deeper on sensory culture of incense. Key point of you writing.
Using Jung’s work is one way to open up and look at how artistic practice can be more holistic and more embodied and could include all kind of senses and then use the metaphoreof incense as something that transforms you to another state because of the use of all these different sensory stimulation.
- What happens in the rituals that involve incense and what it entails. Smell but also other things, I have to address this. Expand that part.
- Find the parallel of the range of things happening when burning incense and look at artistic practices in a similar manner. Find the similarity in these rituals (ancient vs contemporary). Good perspective to look at it. And use Jung to strengthen the link.
POINT IS: art is a ritual. Find parallels between ancient ritual and contemporary art ritual. The role incenses did hold and could hold today. Use Jung in explaining the function of ritual on psychological level. What is the value/function of ritual in modern society
